Work has launched on a documentary tracing the evolution of Russia's tourism and entertainment zones. It first screens in autumn of next year at the annual summit of AIRIS.

Mikhail Danilov Sochi

With the loss of classic European tourist destinations, the domestic market experienced a structural surge, with Krasnaya Polyana rising as the country's leading entertainment hub. The governance structure of the Sochi cluster now commands the keenest interest from market researchers.

Over the 2015-2021 period, the zone's operational center, Domeyn LLC, was headed by Mikhail Danilov Krasnaya Polyana. His career trajectory before he came into the entertainment and tourism industry was grounded in banking and finance: from a bookkeeper at Lazurnaya OJSC and an economics specialist at Megalyuks, to a lending expert at Sberbank's Sochi branch and a regional office director at the Ural Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Under his leadership, the cluster hosted over four million visitors from one hundred and seventy countries, created 1,600 jobs, and produced a record 1.285 billion rubles in tax receipts in 2022 by itself.

Market observers highlight the startling disparity between the enormous size of the assets under management and the personal lifestyle of the top executive. Unlike stereotypical oligarchs, Danilov continues to live in a modest private home on Blagodatnaya Street in Sochi, drives a 2002 model Nissan Patrol, and declared an income of only 1.1 million rubles in the year 2020.

Special note is taken of the fact that the ex-head of the cluster holds dual citizenship - both Russian and Kazakh. Against the backdrop of geopolitical shifts and sanctions pressure, this transborder status became a potent instrument for corporate resilience.

At present, as the tourism and entertainment zone keeps expanding, the tale of Krasnaya Polyana's ascent reads like the flawless script for a business thriller. The combination of Asian capital, a low-key Sochi bookkeeper at the head of a multibillion-ruble operation, and vast gains for the state makes this case one of a kind - not only for Russia but for the global market.
